It’s been nine years since Britney Spears last performed at the MTV VMAs and the pop princess is now ready to make the comeback fans have been waiting for.
With her ninth studio album, Glory, set to drop on August 26, MTV has just announced that Spears will take the stage in Madison Square Garden during the live award show just two days later on Sunday, August 28.
Spears posted an announcement video on her Twitter today and took fans on a walk down memory lane.

The same breed of snake from Spear’s iconic 2001 VMA performance of “I’m A Slave 4 U” slithers through a dressing room full of Spears’ recognizable costumes in the new teaser video.
There’s the red pleather jumpsuit from Spears’ space-travelling “Oops! I Did It Again” video, as well as pearls and a wedding dress, a nod to her 2003 VMA performance of “Like A Virgin” with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott. We’re gonna bet you remember it. We’re also gonna bet nodding Justin Timberlake remembers it.
The shimmering nude bodysuit Spears’ revealed after throwing off her black suit and top hat during her “Satisfaction” and “Oops! I Did It Again” performance at the 2000 VMAs is in the dressing room, as if we’ve forgotten that one either.
The teaser video includes narration from Spears, who says, “The VMAs don’t just give you a stage, they give you a story. It’s a way of taking a fraction of a second and making it live forever. Before you know it, it’s history. Before you know it, it’s Britney, bitch.”
Spears’ last performance at the MTV VMAs was in 2007, when the singer had a less than triumphant return to the stage while performing “Gimme More.”
This time around should be a different story, with Spears back in touring shape thanks to her hugely successful Las Vegas residency.
Spears will reportedly perform her new single, “Make Me,” along with rapper G-Eazy. The performers are the second act confirmed for this year’s award show, which will also feature a performance from Rihanna, who will be accepting this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Spears previously won the award in 2011.
The 2016 MTV VMAs featuring performances from Rihanna, Britney Spears and G Eazy will air Sunday, August 28 at 9E/6P on MTV.
